Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger plot

In this documentary, Martin Scorsese celebrates the legacy of the legendary film duo Powell and Pressburger. Using a wealth of clips and rare archival footage, Scorsese explores the duo's daring genius and their colossal impact on film history. Numerous film fragments and unique archive material help provide insight into how brilliant Powell and Pressburger were. Martin Scorsese movingly shows how daring and uncompromising the men's work was, and how this is reflected in his own films.

Disappointing documentary about the films of the famous duo, who have so many classics to their name.

Martin Scorsese talks about Powell & Pressburger's film careers via an autocue and regularly links them to his own films, partly because the director & screenwriter themselves don't have much to say about their films (or the material is missing). This results in more than two hours of sleepiness, because Scorsese rarely gets further than retelling film stories, interspersed with fragments from the films.

There is hardly any reflection, making connections or any depth. Too bad, because from Black Narcissus (1947) the duo pulls out all the (magical) stops, ending with the masterpiece Peeping Tom (1960).

Because he suffered a lot from asthma as a child, Martin Scorsese brought it to television where no American films were shown at the time. The programming therefore consisted largely of British films and because of that Scorsese discovered the idiosyncratic films of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger at a young age. In this documentary he expresses his admiration for the oeuvre of 'The Archers' and discusses the influence that certain scenes have had on his own oeuvre. A reasonably interesting documentary that alternates fragments from the film with Scorsese telling his story in a cinema seat. A more imaginative form would have been appropriate here. Now it mainly reminds me of bonus material for a Powell & Pressburger box set.
