Holland Pop 1970 plot

June 2020 marked the 50th anniversary of the Holland Pop Festival in the Kralingse Bos in Rotterdam. Known as Europe's answer to Woodstock, this festival was a milestone in European music history. It was the first large-scale event in Europe where visitors could also spend the night on the festival site. Nearly 100,000 people gathered on the festival site for three days, driven by an atmosphere of love, peace and happiness, to listen to legendary bands such as Santana, Jefferson Airplane and Pink Floyd. In this documentary about this historic event, the former organizers are interviewed and Ferri Ronteltap collects archive images to paint a vivid picture of this special period in the history of music.

My father wanted to see this (he had the concert film at home, see Love and Music (Film, 1971) ) so I just went along nicely. This meant nothing to me at all. Outside the cinema I spoke to an older gentleman who indicated that he had been there himself in the past.

Anyway, really an information documentary with a lot of talking heads and rather boring images and little music. It was mainly about setting up the festival. Quite fascinating in itself, but with this way of presenting 40 minutes is really enough. Then those few 71 minutes are really too many. The most beautiful are the atmospheric images, especially of, say, a bombed-out Rotterdam right after the war. And in terms of content, the spirit of the times is also used beautifully about the how and why of this festival. Enough good elements, but a slightly sexier presentation would be nice. 2.5*.

Holland Pop 1970 – also known as the Kralingse Bos Festival – was the first multi-day festival on mainland Europe. This documentary outlines the history of this groundbreaking festival based on conversations with the organizers and those who ensured the smooth running of the festival. The moving images of the festival were also shown in the documentary Stamping Ground (1971) by Hans Jürgen Pohland and George Sluizer and in any case give the impression that the atmosphere was very similar to the Woodstock Festival . Ronteltap combines the dynamic camera work from that film with statically filmed interviews. Robert-Jan Stips (who performed with Supersister at the time) is the only musician who speaks and feminist Hedy d'Ancona speaks on behalf of the visitors. Nostalgic documentary about a groundbreaking moment in (national) rock history could have let more people have their say.
