Jérémie [Félix Kysyl] returns to his old hometown of Saint-Martial for the funeral of his boss and temporarily finds shelter with Martine [Catherine Frot]. He soon clashes with Martine's son [Jean-Baptiste Durand] who believes that Jérémie wants to seduce his mother and must therefore answer to Martine's ex-husband [Serge Richard]. Starts off very slowly and takes the path of a crime thriller before adopting an emphatically black-comedy tone. Has some amusing moments, but the deadpan humor does not always come across well.

The film reminded me of Quand Vient l'Automne (2024), which is also a crime mystery set in the French countryside where people pick mushrooms (champignos) in the forest and which also involves (sexual) secrets where you as a viewer are initially 1-0 behind because you don't know what the others already know when the main character returns to the village after many years of living in the city. As the plot unfolds, however, the film becomes increasingly absurd: the film combines the genre of the serious crime thriller with a kind of sex farce that becomes increasingly absurd and, just like the main character who receives a visit from the police detective in bed at night, you no longer know whether what is happening is still somewhat credible. But because it is so strange – while the film is also serious and puts the repressed sexual desires in the countryside on the map – the film is surprising and interesting and is also entertaining as a thriller.

Misericorde starts with a long scene in which a car approaches a typical French village, drives into the village and eventually stops at the bakery. This scene returns a few more times in a different way later. There are more scenes that more or less repeat themselves. And that gives the film a tight corset that works well. What starts as a thriller gradually becomes an (Alex van) Warmerdamian farce. The film also gets funnier as the end approaches.

At first I didn't understand the title because Miserocorde, as I understood from my daughter, is a kind of pole that dancers can lean on when they have to wait for a long time.

Just googled: A miserocorde is a part of the choir stalls on which monks can lean during the long wait. Ok.

And...grace or forgiveness.

Aha, now I understand.
