Directing duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett jointly ceased their collaboration with the Scream series and raised their level again with their latest horror film. Abigail contains a typical whole where everything tilts every so often, so that the unpredictability remains hanging above water. It is indeed a pity that the marketing of the film kills the substantive concept, but fortunately it does not get in the way of the fun. Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett benefit from some excellent performances, with Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens and Kevin Durand specifically standing out. Alisha Weir also does an above-average job, but looks a little too often as if she is (forgive the somewhat rude choice of words) stoned. Angus Cloud is also certainly on a roll, but leaves the stage too early to compete with the other names. The horror comes out noticeably bloody, but the build-up of tension, on the other hand, is less effective. Nowhere does the event manage to turn out to be a real nail-biter and some of the murders are far too inconspicuous, but in the end Abigail turned out to be a very entertaining popcorn movie. Absolutely no regrets about my early cinema visit and the non-discerning fan will most likely enjoy this.

Entertaining film, nothing more or less. It's a shame that the trailer already gave away so much, meaning nothing surprising happened in the film itself.
There is a good build-up of tension in the first half. Towards the end, the film, like many horrors, degenerates into somewhat bland explosions of blood and violence. That goes on a little too long; the last fifteen to twenty minutes didn't have to be like this anymore.
In terms of atmosphere and visuals, everything is fine. The house where almost everything takes place is nice and spooky. The cast does a decent job for a film like this. Every now and then there is something to laugh about, although I couldn't quite place the bursts of laughter that I regularly heard around me in the audience.

I went into the film with a fresh perspective. I didn't watch a trailer and I didn't even read the plot.
It's nice to go into the film like that. During the first 45 minutes, the tension builds up well and the film gets under your skin at times. Alternated with some humorous moments that reduce the tension a bit and you have a very entertaining film, especially because you have no idea which direction the film is going (useful when I read here about the spoilers in the trailer). Once it is clear, the film no longer really surprises and it is a perfunctory, but very light and full of bodies exploding..
The makers had better stick to this rather than that exhausted Scream franchise.
