"A Great Play of Rural Life"

Samson South leaves his mountain village and his sweetheart Sally Spicer to paint in New York. Under the influence of Adrienne Lescott, he becomes a celebrated artist and a gentleman of rank. As a feud arises between the South and Hollman families, Samson must return to the mountains. Sally is both excited and anxious about his arrival. She still loves Samson, but she fears she has lost him to Adrienne.

The film is based on the novel of the same name, but with a running time of just over an hour, not everything comes out, not least the characters. The novel is said to have more backstory and deeper relationships that are painfully lacking in the film - should this be surprising?

The plot is quite interesting and concerns two families that have long been involved in a blood feud. One of the "barbarians" and also the attacker on the life of the other clan gets the chance to develop himself as an artist in the big New York. In the end everything turns out fine. That's how it goes with those super old movies from the old box.

I watched a restored version. All in all reasonable roles and less theatrical than what you would expect from such pictures. Farnum is very good in his role and Winifred Kingston is also fine.
