De Terugreis plot

Jaap has been with Maartje for almost 50 years. While the sulky Jaap no longer has much desire to do things, the sometimes somewhat confused Maartje is still full of zest for life. When the couple receives a letter from an old holiday friend, Jaap is reluctantly persuaded to visit him in Southern Europe. So many years later, the two travel in their old car through a completely changed Europe; bickering, but also reminiscing one memory after another. Along the way, Jaap comes to the painful realization that his wife has dementia. Realizing that everything may be different, they learn again why they love each other.

Jaap [Martin van Waardenberg] is a grouch who prefers not to deviate from his daily routine and stays indoors as much as possible. That becomes increasingly difficult when the behavior of his wife Maartje [Leny Breederveld] becomes more and more erratic. When she keeps insisting that she wants to go to Spain to say goodbye to an old friend, Jaap only changes after much insistence. He doesn't dare drive on the highway, so Jaap and Maartje embark on an extra-long journey through Belgium and France. Jaap soon realizes that he is losing part of Maartje. But he also finds something he thought he had lost. In Maartje, but also in herself. The first half hour of this road movie is a bit slow, also because Waardenberg is not an actor who easily wins the audience's sympathy. But partly due to Breederveld's disarming performance and the believable way in which Van Waardenberg unfreezes, this has a number of fun and moving moments and a simple, effective ending.

A Dutch film with a current 60+ subject (dementia), in which the dialogues are good and the acting is convincing.

And that was it. The scenario spreads out the events in one flat pattern, in which - apart from the ending - there are no highs or lows to be seen.

Before the return journey begins, we have passed a boring half hour, during which you wonder whether no one - except everyone in the cinema - has noticed that the woman has dementia.

And then the return journey, a succession of predictable lame jokes where laughter and tears just won't budge.

I thought this was SUCH an unDutch good movie. Wow. I do think that people in their late 70s are not as unworldly as these characters. But I do understand it. The world IS also a fucking weird place when you look around you. Anyone who doesn't see that is just sleeping. This is also a film with a lot of tenderness and a sense of humor. I had a good laugh and yes: at one point tears actually flowed down my face.
