Good Grief plot
"Love lost is love found."
Former painter Marc is a children's book illustrator who has a comfortable marriage to the charismatic Oliver. When he dies, Marc collapses. He travels to Paris with his best friends Sophie and Thomas and reflects on his life and hard but well-intentioned truths are proclaimed.

Daniel Levy is the director, is the producer, wrote the script and plays the lead role. Quite an ego trip that also works out well. Although the protagonist Marc, played by Levy, is emphatically in the foreground, he is a sensitive person who has to deal with such adversity that he easily has the viewer's sympathy. Levy does not portray his character Marc as someone of impeccable behavior. Over the course of the film, his grieving and pitiful facade crumbles somewhat and, with the help of two good friends, he has to face the fact that there are also unpleasant aspects to him.
Due to the death of his husband, Marc can no longer hide behind his husband's popularity and financial assets. The two friends who support him in his period of mourning confront him with his patience and that causes some obstacles in the friendship. Levy guards against extreme drama and tells Marc's story very consistently with subdued flair and at a subdued pace.
Because the themes surrounding grieving and self-expertise are fairly heavy themes, it is nice that Levy also introduces lighter moments. The lightness also helps to connect with the characters. They are sometimes a bit tiring and difficult to digest.
Good Grief is a solid film with moments that encourage reflection, with moments that are poignant, with lightness and with pleasant acting. An excellent tragicomedy.

This is not an average film and is therefore certainly not intended for everyone. Tragedy-comedy, but mainly tragedy. It's about the loss of a life partner and a bond with friends who absorb this. Lots of deep and philosophical conversations that make you think. Beautiful atmospheric pictures of Paris in the Christmas spirit. I also like the mature relationships and dialogues. An additional but not unimportant fact is that the protagonists have a gay relationship and it is not even a typical straight couple. And it all comes across so naturally and not forced that the entire film moves along quietly. If you are looking for a film with dialogue, this one is recommended. 3.5*
