How Do You Spell Home? plot

In Juneco, a Flemish residence for unaccompanied minors, a group of refugee young people from countries such as Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Eritrea live. They stay there until they turn eighteen. Those who are granted asylum in Belgium are looking for their own home. Young people who have exhausted all legal remedies await an uncertain fate in a country where they are no longer welcome. Filmmaker Louisiana Mees-Fongang stayed for months in the small-scale home, where there is a fragile balance between the guidance involved and the residents, who have already experienced so much.

Juneco is a shelter for minor asylum seekers that is part of Emmaus Youth Care. Young people are welcome there until they turn 18. Because the process for granting these young people refugee status can be lengthy, they live with great uncertainty about their future. This fly-on-the-wall portrait shows the impact this has on the young people, but also on the professionals and volunteers who try to help them as best they can. It's a captivating behind-the-scenes look with a touch of humor, including one from a young resident who uses her role as interpreter to give her own perspective on the questions posed by a staff member.
