This film was one of the big hits at the Imagine film festival. Director Madarasz also played here a few years ago with his previous film "Hurok" and you could already see that he was a particularly inventive filmmaker who can adapt the standard genre elements to his own will with a certain playfulness.
He continues this in this film "halfway home", which is a bit lighter in tone and mixes more comedy and romantic drama with fantastic elements. What's great is that it never gets too sappy and the story is actually constantly in motion. The images are beautifully shot and as the director said, "I really wanted to make it some kind of attraction," and so he does. You are taken into the story of Krisztian and Agi who quickly fall in love with each other.
There are a number of nice characters and the fact that the night watchman becomes a kind of handyman for the spirits to take their souls to heaven provides plenty of nice scenes. Somewhere halfway through the film it tilts towards the end. It feels a bit like there are two films in one and this hard transition is actually the only critical point I can make that costs half a point.
Of course the ending (I won't spoil anything) is not very original, but this fits perfectly with the tone of the film and it would not be appropriate to do it differently. In short, this is just a really fun movie. In any case, the Hungarian film (e.g. Liza the fox fairy, but also Ruben Brandt and white plastic sky) is a real diamond in the field of fantastic film, I can recommend it to anyone who loves science fiction/fantasy.
