Black Barbie: A Documentary plot

This documentary explores the influence of three black women at toy manufacturer Mattel who were responsible for the debut of the colored Barbie doll in 1980: Beulah Mae Mitchell, Kitty Black Perkins and Stacey McBride Irby. Using interviews with experts and charismatic stories about what happened at Mattel in the days leading up to the debut of the new doll, the documentary explores the importance of real representation. Dolls are not just dolls, but symbols of childhood that can be crucial for identity formation and imagination.

45-year-old Lagueria Davis has no interest in dolls at all, let alone Barbie. But her 85-year-old aunt Beulah Mae Mitchell has a huge collection of dolls. Beulah was the first black employee at Mattel and a confidante of Ruth Handler, who created and designed the original Barbie in 1959. Davis worked for 13 years on this documentary, which makes clear how important Barbie (and therefore toys in general) was and is for children's self-image. Black Barbie appeared on the market in 1981, but it had a long history. Kitty Perkins (the designer of Black Barbie) and Stacey McBride talk about how Mattel brought more and more diversity to products through the original Black Barbie. Prominent black women talk about the importance and honor of having a Barbie modeled on them in this fascinating, critical, but also joyful documentary.
