Cool video.

Harada is doing well these days. He has always been a worthy director, but his latest films always offer something extra. Bad Lands is quite nicely structured in terms of structure, and features a great Sakura Ando, who shows (once again) that she can do more than just brighten up indie & arthouse dramas.

It takes a bit of paddling in the first hour, because Harada only gradually introduces the setting, but that keeps it interesting. Not unimportant for a film that easily exceeds the two-hour mark. The second half is more solid, although the feeling that this is all part of a broader whole remains intact.

Ando is really great here, visually it is also tight and although it is quite thick at times, Harada manages to find a nice balance between genre and drama. A film that may not immediately catch the eye on paper, but in retrospect it is difficult to compare it with anything else.

4.0* and a extensive review
