Occupied City plot
The past collides with our present in Steve McQueen's daring documentary The Occupied City, inspired by the book Atlas of an Occupied City. Amsterdam 1940-1945 by Bianca Stigter. McQueen creates two interlocking portraits: one shows door-to-door the Nazi occupation that still haunts the city, the other is a vivid journey through the last years of pandemic and protest.

For more than four hours, Carice van Houten reads from 'Atlas of an Occupied City – Amsterdam 1940-1945' by Bianca Stigter. These are brief biographies linked to an address in our capital. Steve McQueen filmed locations with a static camera during the Corona crisis. Image and sound so often contradict each other, causing them to get in each other's way. No idea what McQueen thought he could add to the book, which for people with an above-average knowledge of the history of the Second World War has little to offer other than detailed confirmation of what they already knew.
