Dark Harvest plot

"Evil stalks"

In a small town, a supernatural creature named Sawtooth Jack emerges every fall. He appears from the corn fields and subsequently approaches the local church. There, violent gangs of young boys hungrily await their chance to confront the legendary nightmare in an annual harvest ritual of life and death. Richie Shepard lives in the shadow of his big brother who won the prize last year and was therefore able to leave the city behind. To prove himself and join his brother, Richie teams up with restless dreamer Kelly Haines, who will also do anything to escape the dead-end town. Against the rules, Richie and Kelly decide to hunt down the legendary nightmare to win the competition and their freedom together.

Not a Halloween classic, but certainly not bad within the genre. The film starts off a bit awkwardly in terms of tone and it takes a while before you can make sense of the plot and the characters, but there is something to enjoy along the way. They don't care about a liter of blood more or less and with Sawtooth Jack the genre has a nicely designed new monster.

After director David Slade briefly occupied himself with TV episodes and a single segment within an anthology film, he finally returns to pure horror films with Dark Harvest and how he has missed them. This time it is a book adaptation of the novel of the same name written by Norman Partridge. I think this film takes some different turns, but fortunately in the spirit of enjoyment, that doesn't get in the way of the end result. The atmosphere is nice from the start and Slade's skillful direction also helps it a little further. The brutal and graphic murder scenes are quite striking, but the aggressive camerawork is also striking. Slade's commitment to collaboration with cinematographer Larry Smith (who has worked with Stanley Kubrick and Nicolas Windig Refn, among others) produces an almost unique horror result that kept me interested from start to finish. On top of all those compliments, Casey Likes' acting is very successful and that also applies to the supporting characters. Perhaps they are a bit too caricatured (such as the cop and the bully), but nevertheless enthusiastic. The dark plot twist of Dark Harvest is original, but lacks a little too much context and Richie's love interest causes some clumsy interruptions within the fast pace, but otherwise I am completely overwhelmed by this new work by Slade. I already can't wait for his next (horror) contribution.

It doesn't look all that bad and the acting is also quite good, but what a stupid story. And I didn't find it scary or exciting either. I was hoping for a nice ending that would explain things, but that didn't happen either. I thought it was a disappointment.
