A passenger (Dakota Johnson) and a taxi driver (Sean Penn) start a conversation in a hesitant tone. The small and private space that keeps out the dark night evokes a feeling of security and intimacy. The passenger and the driver share secrets, share truths and make (shameful) confessions. A film that, except for a few moments, only takes place in the privacy of the taxi. Daddio is an excellent dramatic debut from director and writer Christy Hall.

Two characters that differ from each other, but nevertheless two characters that are both fascinating. Both come from diverse social backgrounds. Both in a different age category. An entertaining and sometimes intriguing conversation arises between the two characters. A conversation that is initiated and consolidated mainly by Penn's loose, honest and simple attitude. A conversation that starts out of polite curiosity. Impressed by Penn's life experience and knowledge of people, Johnson develops confidence and becomes sufficiently triggered to allow the hesitant exchange of individual sentences to develop into a full-fledged conversation.

Outside the taxi, lanterns illuminate the monotonous highway, providing the taxi with safe shelter from the cold and intrusive reflections of their lighting. It's better inside. The conversation deepens. The taxi driver tells from his own experience how selfish men enter into relationships and how easily women allow themselves to be used. The young woman shares experiences from her youth that explain her current choice of partner. At times it all sounds a bit clichéd. Sometimes not. At the end of the journey there is emotion. Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn are convincing in their roles as people who break open their cocoon of loneliness with words. Even if it is only for the duration of a taxi ride. Great movie.

During a long taxi ride from JFK Airport, an in-depth emotional conversation ensues between the driver [Sean Penn] and the passenger [Dakota Johnson] that yields new insights into their past personal relationships and yours. The static nature gives writer and director Hall little room to keep the dialogues visually interesting. In fact, it lends itself much better to a play, but Johnson and Penn are evenly matched and turn it into a modest acting duel. Especially for fans of the leading actors.

I agree with The Guardian, despite the good efforts of Johnson and Penn, the film fails to captivate. And I found it rather a rather boring film....
