Alreadymade plot

Who is behind Fountain, chosen in 2004 by a panel of five hundred so-called art connoisseurs as the most influential work of art of the 20th century? That question is a battleground. Is it by a celebrated male artist or by a forgotten female artist? Art experts tumble over each other to prove themselves right. The interests are great and the arguments numerous. But what is their truth worth, if the artist himself wanted to remain anonymous? Speculation about the work of art creates value, which goes beyond the art market on which the many copies of the work circulate.

According to many art historians, 'Fountain' is the most important work of art of the 20th century. The original version dates from 1917 and was a urinal, initialed by a certain R. Mutt. It was submitted anonymously to an exhibition in New York intended to completely break down barriers to art, but it was rejected. The urinal was a media sensation, but it disappeared without a trace. Until Marcel Duchamp, one of the organizers of the 1917 exhibition, presented a replica in 1935 and claimed that 'Fountain' was his creation. Barbara Visser is convinced that the artwork was created by Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, an eccentric woman who defied all social norms, was known as a 'walking work of art' and – crucially – had an extremely close bond with Duchamp. There is no concrete evidence for this statement, but that does not prevent Visser from portraying the Baroness as an unrecognized genius who was a victim of a male-dominated culture. It is not very convincing, but Visser does deserve praise for the idiosyncrasy with which she has set up this documentary.

Quite variable in quality - second world scene doesn't work and body language expert collage is really out of place -, but also very good scenes, especially those that show the production process.

Barbara Visser was very busy and at one point I could no longer see the bale through the straw. But yes, I also have that with expressions of the Dada movement, so the chosen form is appropriate.
