The film is very boring and almost provokes the viewer by continuously showing for minutes how, for example, wood is chopped or by showing an entire conversation at an information meeting. This must have been done deliberately to allow the viewer to experience the 'peace' that living in or with nature provides in contrast to the hurried city life, but it is not meditative either. This tranquility is deceptive, because the film is about the conflict between man and nature: we inevitably disturb nature a little with our arrival, but we have gone too far - there is no longer any balance - so that nature turns against us (obviously a current theme with environmental pollution and climate change): the deer that normally avoids humans but attacks when tipped by humans is a symbol of this. And that water flowing downhill undoubtedly represents bad decisions from above that cause misery for the people (such as contaminated drinking water). The ending is a bit mysterious, but I think that he stops the man from the city because he wants to intervene in nature again (the project leaders do have sympathy for the people in the village - they also experience how nice it is to be in the to live in nature – but remain urban), even if this leads to the death of his daughter (perhaps this will also restore some of the balance). Unfortunately, the film did not captivate me due to its slow pace and lack of interesting scenes or dialogues.

Judging from the many rave reviews, there is a market for films that consist of endless shots in which nothing interesting happens. Defenders call it 'poetic' or 'meditative', I call it soporific and boring as hell. Opens with a long tracking shot of trees, includes a long sequence in which local handyman Takumi [Hitoshi Omika] and a friend [Ryô Nishikawa] put spring water in jerry cans and take them to a car a few hundred meters away. You can also enjoy a long walk in the woods that is strongly reminiscent of an unedited version of 'Early Birds' or some nature program from the 80s. The wafer-thin story concerns the fear of water pollution due to the arrival of a company from Tokyo that wants to exploit the area for 'glamping'. Beautiful pictures will help you get a good night's sleep.

Yes, the film is slow and at times a bit too slow, but I often find the pace very pleasant. Wonderful relaxation therapy almost. Beautiful images of nature that feel very real, as if you were there yourself. Strongly shot, pleasantly soft use of color (much of the color has disappeared due to the winter and the snow and especially white and light brown remain) and supported by special music. The acting is fine and beautifully subdued.

Particularly halfway through, there are some great scenes that are extremely recognizable and realistic and that last a long time, but where the length is of added value: that village meeting, that meeting and those two colleagues in the car who talk about all kinds of things (including their dates).

The ending is a bit vague, but especially because the atmosphere and tone completely change, I don't think this piece really fits and in terms of content this is also the least interesting part. That part detracts from the rest. 3.5*.
