On Thursday evening, I got to work on this Race for Glory about the battle for the rally title between Audi and Lancia, which I had bought for next to nothing and seemed like a gamble worth taking.

For anyone with a bit of motorsport history or who has regularly watched Top Gear knows this legendary story, which was fought out in a fantastic manner and where just about every trick in the book was pulled out; it is a great story in that respect and a wonderful subject for a good film. Plus points are definitely the portrayal of the era and all those beautiful retro-style cars; all the well-known tricks make an appearance, such as the deception regarding the number of production cars, the salt in the corners, the tire change, and the fact that Audi had invented 4WD and it was suddenly allowed in the regulations, as well as the difficult and obsterate character of Rohrl, who said his car didn't need a roll cage because he wasn't planning on crashing. I believe Lancia had pulled something similar...

So far so good, where the style and cinematography are fine, as is the soundtrack, and where the whole thing thrives on a certain retro vibe. And in itself, you would say that the story tells itself, that the struggle itself is sufficient, and that the characters and/or backgrounds don't really matter all that much. But the film seriously suffers from mediocre dialogue, cardboard characters, and a deep character vacuum. Ouch! This goes completely wrong, especially when things are contrived and added, like the racer in a coma.

And that is a damn shame, because surely more could have been made of this with a little more depth and character development; the battle between the cars is a good enough story in itself, but it simply lacks substance and structure.
