Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed plot

"Behind the screen. Beyond the secrets."

Because of his high-profile death from AIDS and its effect on the movement, Rock Hudson is probably better known now as an icon of LGBTQ history than for the movies he starred in. That's certainly the point of this documentary, which explores his personal life extensively while taking a cursory look at his filmography. His inner conflicts are also extensively discussed.

Rock Hudson was one of the most popular film stars of the 1950s. The homosexuality of this All-American Man was an open secret for decades, until he declared, shortly before his death in 1985, that he was a victim of AIDS. Hudson is the personification of the life of gay men in the 1950s: successful because he masked his orientation with clichés of masculinity and resigned himself to this for a long time. Kijak brilliantly mixes scenes from various films featuring Rock Hudson to underscore the irony of his public image, but also emphasizes the crucial role Hudson unintentionally played in the further course of the AIDS epidemic.
