Stepne plot

A middle-aged man travels to the family home to care for his dying mother. He reunites with his brother and the woman he loves and reflects on his life. For example, he once made the choice to exchange the village for the big city. On her deathbed, his mother tells her that she has buried a treasure in the barn.

Combination of family drama and cinema verite in which a family drama unfolds among authentic residents of the Ukrainian village of Stepne and several villages in the area. The family drama concerns brothers Aniatoly [Oleksandr Maksiakov] and Oleksiy [Oleg Primogenov] who prepare for the death of their very old mother [Nina Antonova] and her funeral. The location work and the involvement of local residents in seemingly improvised scenes gives this a special sense of authenticity, but that is at the expense of the pace. Moreover, the story is ultimately very thin. Atmosphere and mood clearly take precedence over content.
