La Dama del Silencio: El Caso de la Mataviejitas plot

Between 1998 and 2005, Mexico City was hit by a series of murders of elderly women who had been strangled in their own homes. The profiles of the victims sparked unprecedented social outrage and media attention. The Public Prosecutor's Office devoted all resources and efforts to apprehending Mexico's first serial killer. Witnesses described the suspect as tall, robust and strong, posing as a nurse to gain the victims' trust. In January 2006, after more than forty murders, multiple failed arrests and multiple contradictions, an unexpected suspect is apprehended in broad daylight.

True crime series and documentaries popped up like mushrooms in the 1990s; the serial killer was in demand. I'll confess right away: I've always found those true crime shows on TV pretty scary, scarier than movies about serial killers. No doubt because you knew this was the reality. Back then, not anymore. Strangely enough, that decreases as you get older.

But the genre has of course evolved over the years; the current trend is that it is all very light, almost comical, (The Assassination of Gianni Versace, I, Tonya, Dahmer ..) Also with this one. That has something, I think. It does ensure that the seriousness of the whole event (the number of murders is estimated at 42-48) fades somewhat into the background.

What distinguishes this documentary in particular is that we are dealing with a female serial killer. Not a poisoner or Sister of Death, no, this murderess is not inferior to her male colleagues on a physical level. She strangles her victims, even if they are very old. That doesn't really come as a surprise, because you already realize that when you see the poster, the title and the synopsis.

At first they thought it was a transvestite.

The murders were committed in the 00s (by the way, the images look remarkably old). In Mexico, the serial killer was then, don't know if that is still the case, publicly shown, a kind of press moment where questions could also be asked.

Mataviejitas turned out to be a wrestler. In several photos she shows off her masculine appearance in colorful campy wrestling outfits with masks. Reminded me of John Wayne Gacy's clown photos. Pretty creepy.
