Dearest Fiona plot
An off-screen voice reads letters from a father to his daughter. Meanwhile, archive images from the Netherlands of the 20th century are shown. The film shows daily life and especially the heavy work that is only slowly made easier by machines. Fiona Tan examines in a moving way the possibilities that arise when image and sound diverge.

In 1988, Fiona Tan moved from Australia to Amsterdam for her studies. Ian Henderson reads the letters that Fiona's father wrote to her from August 1988 to the end of 1990. He writes about the fortunes of the family and pets and occasionally mentions some world news. What we see are fragments from documentaries about the Netherlands from the period from 1899 to 1931. For over an hour I tried to make a connection between image and sound, but there was none. Received here and there as a revolutionary experiment, but David Lynch already did the same in 1974 (The Amputee) and took much less time to make his point (or lack thereof). My advice: ignore the letters and immerse yourself in nostalgia for a time when life in the Netherlands was a lot simpler.
