Bastarden plot
In the eighteenth century, the Danish King Frederik V declares that Jutland must be colonized and focuses on new taxes. His decision is not put into practice by anyone. After all, the piece of land is walked by wolves, highwaymen and the untouched natural elements. The lone soldier Ludvig von Kahlen dares to enter the moor. He is determined to achieve his goal of accumulating honor and wealth.

Arcel's new film has temporarily made it to the shortlist for the upcoming Oscars as best foreign film. Mads Mikkelsen does not hesitate to occasionally leave Hollywood aside to focus on a local film. With a cost price of €8M, it is far above the (Danish or) European average. It is also visible. Beautiful setting and a good cast including more famous names such as Gustav Lindh and Soren Malling.
A lot of effort has gone into the desolate arid environment of Jutland. The 18th century was no fun in Denmark. Not even the 19th century, if I can believe other films. The aristocratic feudal system is still established. Stubborn farmers like Ludvig could work more or less independently, but other runaway workers/farmers were declared outlaws as illegal immigrants. If an exalted sadistic nobleman claimed something, well, he claimed it.
A film that takes plenty of time to tell the farming life with its ups and downs of farmer Ludvig. Here it is not so much about heavy farm labor, meager or failed harvests. It is the peripheral activities that attract attention and they are not exactly affectionate. Dura lex, sed lex, but even for the stubborn among us it is sometimes just too much.
Anyone who likes a kind of medieval setting with a lot of rumbling between poor farmers and snooty nobles has come to the right place. Mads Mikkelsen is doing an excellent job otherwise! He has already won the prize for best actor at the European film awards.

Fantastic film with one of the Mikkelsen brothers and a number of very good well-known Danish actors. They have an incredible amount of good actors in that small country. The Mikkelsen brothers are both tremendous professionals. As someone says in a review, it is actually about themes that are also happening now, such as racism, abuse, class, exploitation, etc. Beautiful decor, beautiful film adaptation and top actors... what more could you want?
