With this layered, deeply moving animated film, Berger proves that a strong story is much more important than slick animation and that silent cinema is still safe in his hands. In 1980s New York, the lonely dog (simply called 'Dog') decides to buy a companion robot. Dog really blossoms, but after a day at the beach he has to leave the robot behind. The next day he returns to save his friend, but the beach is hermetically sealed until the beginning of the following summer. Both the robot and dog dream of their reunion, but during the time they are separated their lives continue as usual. A beautiful story about making and losing friends is a delight for young and old. Children will love the inventive visual ideas, such as the exuberant dance to the disco classic 'September' by Earth, Wind & Fire and a game of bowling with a snowman. Adults understand the deeper meaning behind it. My personal favorite: the scene with the birds. One of the best animated films of all time.

Sweet video. It takes just too long to remain completely interesting and to give a really high score, but there is a lot of good in it. (And the film is not boring). Very cool animation that seems simple on the one hand but has quite a bit of detail on the other. Nice atmosphere and especially the scenes in the big city are beautiful (I'm a huge fan of animation in the big city). Many individual moments also work (with those birds) and themes such as saying goodbye and moving on with your life are presented very maturely and well; this movie touched me. And actually when I type this, I think that this film deserves more than I initially gave it. 4.0*.

ps I was sitting in a room where there were people my age, but also elderly people and very small children (who all watched silently and with fascination). Truly a film that can work on many levels and is suitable for many age groups.

I postponed these Robot dreams because I was a bit hesitant when I saw the animations. I had in mind some kind of crazy animated film, but I was grossly mistaken. What a nice movie!

A film about friendship and loneliness. And apparently in Dog's world, being seen with a companion robot isn't a problem.

It is striking that not a single word is spoken. But that wasn't necessary. Everything is very clear, which also means that the film mainly works on the feeling and is still visually strong. Nice vibe that hangs over the film too. Funny and moving. I also like that reference to Woody Allen's Manhattan on the bench.
