Day Zero plot
After serving eight years in prison without incident, former elite soldier Emon is released, finally able to reunite with his estranged wife and young daughter. However, he returns to a civilization that has been completely taken over by a dangerous virus with terrifying effects on the human body. Pursued by the living dead, Emon races through the perilous urban landscape in a last-ditch effort to redeem himself and save his family.

A zombie film starring the Filipino-American Brandon Vera who is strongly reminiscent of Dwayne Johnson. Vera is a retired cage fighter who can now show his fighting skills in films. Day Zero logically contains the necessary martial arts scenes. Fortunately, the film is more than just martial arts. Vera's role involves more than that of the cool hero who emotionlessly eliminates his opponents. The story is not very complicated, but it does require a little more from an actor than beating down opponents. Brandon Vera is not a good actor. Yet he manages to present himself in such a sensitive manner that he easily gains the viewer's sympathy.
Day Zero is not a complicated film. In fact, it is about a zombie plague that threatens the people in an apartment complex. The story tells nothing about how this came about. The viewer is almost immediately plunged into the zombie violence. Hectic and dynamic are guaranteed. The viewer who would like more background information or who wants to gain more insight into the characters is not in the right place in that area.
The struggle for survival takes place in a small setting. The limited budget will be the reason for this. It works in itself. Long gray corridors, stuffy rooms and a half-lit stairwell have an oppressive effect. On this small playing field, every corner and every bend arouses menace. The zombie mob usually appears alert and resolutely punishes inattention. Such zombie behavior increases the viewing pleasure. So do the fight scenes. Nice intermezzos that contribute to the viewing pleasure. In my opinion, Day Zero is one of the better films of recent years in this tired genre.
