Nine satirical sketches in which Iranian citizens of all ages have to deal with bureaucracy or imposed norms and values. Filmed with a static camera in which we see the 'victim' and only hear the bureaucrat or moralist. Always entertaining, even if the satirical points are sometimes made quickly. There are a number of gems in return. My favorites: a girl [Afghavan Shabani] who is given a school costume (with a starring role for the headphones), a director [Farzin Mohades] who has to adapt his screenplay and a middle-aged woman [Goha Kheirandish] who is looking for her chihuahua.

The film is set up as a series of nine tableaux, each with a fixed camera focused on a resident of Tehran who is subjected to a humiliating interrogation and/or treatment by a bureaucrat or employer who remains anonymous and who clearly has a more powerful position against which the citizen has to fight almost hopelessly to gain his rights or to retain his dignity at all. This smacks of abuse of power, although it usually concerns the political implementation of religious laws - the "verses" in the title refer to the Koran, which concerns its political translation into everyday worldly life - where the official merely enforces the rules. and implements the policy (which we have known since Arendt as 'the banality of evil').

This sounds monotonous, but most scenes have such realistic, strong dialogue and the fight between humanity and respect against rigid authority is so Kafkaesquely absurd that it continually amazes and amuses. In addition, the director has also given this indictment of the policy of the Iranian authorities a story inspired by the Koran itself (as the director in the film is also advised by the bureaucrat who reviews his film): it opens with an image of the city of Tehran and ends with an earthquake that causes the city to collapse, referring not only to the earthquake-prone fault line under Tehran, mentioned in one of the stories, but also to the Qur'anic surah, mentioned in another, about the Judgment Day with which the film suggests that Tehran will be destroyed by Allah because of its corruption and abuse of power, as an expression of the (secular) hope for a successful uprising of the population against the regime. The film is successful both as a black comedy and as a satire/indictment against the Iranian regime.

Nine short stories in 75 minutes. That's a lot of quantity, but not always with the same quality. The position of women is central. It is not surprising that this is not so positive.

There was one scene without women, almost at the beginning with David. Quite funny, but just like the other scenes, it shows how short the regime is. The criticism of the state of Iran leaves nothing to the imagination.

Tragic, but delivered with a quip and the necessary humor. It's striking how only 1 person appears in the picture at a time. The other party is only involved through its vote. The POV is therefore successful, with the other often looking into the camera.
