I knew this wasn't my cup of tea, but I like to be surprised. But goodness gracious: watching a tomato plant grow is even more exciting than this film. I think this is the first time I've played it safe and left a cinema prematurely. I gambled and lost, hopefully other visitors will enjoy it more.

Lucia [Dar Zuzovsky] is still a teenager when she meets Giacomo Casanova [Jonah Hauer-King]. A few philosophical quotes and a walk to the lake are enough for the two to fall in love, but a tragic turn of events ends the relationship without any explanation. Sixteen years later, the daughter of two domestic servants has become one of the most sought-after prostitutes in Amsterdam. Because she now goes through life as Galathee and always wears a face mask, Casanova does not recognize her when they meet again at an opera. He has now built up a reputation as a womanizer and tries to hook Galathee. Zuzovsky convincingly portrays the vivacious, carefree Lucia from her youth, but Hauer-King has none of Casanova's charisma or charm. Moreover, the slow-witted words are pretentious and often hilariously bad. The camera work by Myrthe Mosterman is beautiful, but the acting of the supporting cast is poor.

Beautiful but boring…. Another Dutch film that completely misses the mark, and you wonder; “Why did this film have to be made?”

No idea, it's not like we're that great at making films in the Netherlands... on the contrary, I would almost say.

Ok, Arthur Japin wrote the book, one of the best contemporary Dutch writers, but that doesn't necessarily make for a good film.

A film about none other than Giacomo Casanova stands or falls with a charismatic actor who jumps off the screen! That is not the case with Jonah Hauer-King at all. If you don't have someone like that, just don't start! A waste of all the effort...

I didn't feel hot or cold about it anyway.

In addition, in the supposed 18th century in Holland and Italy, they speak neither Dutch nor Italian, nor French, which was the lingua Franca of that time. We have to make do with the contrived English again. Despite the beautiful locations and decoration, I often had the impression of watching filmed theatre, in which the texts are spooned up somewhat statically.

And then we also have to go along with the fact that someone doesn’t recognize his great Love because she’s wearing a mask… the synopsis of the film. How credible is that anyway…? In this film, that’s not true at all…
