Herzog immediately distances herself from Fire Of Love, the portrait compiled by National Geographic of volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft who died on June 3, 1991 during a volcanic eruption on Mount Uzen in Japan. Herzog uses only images that the couple made themselves and provides them with his characteristic commentary. We see how their registrations change from 'holiday films' to sometimes staged nature films. Naturally, the most beautiful and spectacular images pass by, which they always captured with a usually calculated risk to their own lives. Inevitably this creates overlap with Fire Of Love, which I saw earlier. I found Herzog's almost compulsive use of monotonous vocals and moody pieces of music downright disturbing. Too often this distracts from the majestic images.

Those who can't stand the heat should stay far away from a volcano. This drama documentary is very much like a chronicle with a death foretold. Herzog, with his infectious English accent, betrays the disaster right at the beginning. Yet this doesn't spoil the journey of discovery we make with the couple. Katia and Maurice change from scientists who research volcanoes purely out of curiosity, to tourists with a fascination for strange worldly scenes, to finally end up as passionate volcano visitors who portray the mystery of life, both beginning and end. Enhanced with Herzog's voice and ethereal music (as noted above, sometimes a bit over the top), this series of images guarantees an immersive viewing experience.

It's true that the requiem music sometimes threatens to jeopardize the film's enjoyment of the stunning visuals, but it's also true that the spectacular nature of what we see illustrates the insignificance of humanity in the face of this force of nature. The incredible power and incredible speeds at which the danger moves.

Watched with fascination at what this little ball we live on might have in store.
