In a village in the arid north of Senegal, Banel and Adama are madly in love with each other, a necessary somewhat dull start to the film in order to develop into a nuanced indictment of the growing customs of a community and the role of women within it. embedded in an increasingly drier landscape that exhausts animals and humans.

Banel as the young black woman who rebels and her lover Adama who is drawn into this, but starts to have doubts.

The story remains small, the images increasingly disturbing.

Then you have me.

The film contains beautiful images throughout - sophisticated in terms of composition and colors - and is therefore pleasant to watch, with the stylistic focus also generating a kind of meditative tranquility, although the theme of the film is disturbing: while Banel and Adama fall in love in an African village together, break with tradition (he is the rightful descendant but does not want to become village head and she is married to him but does not want to have children due to social pressure) and are digging out his own house, the village is plagued by the consequences of climate change due to which heat and drought kill livestock and then also people. It puts a lot of pressure on the couple, although as a viewer you are not really drawn into the drama due to the focus on style and the sparse, somewhat mysterious texts. The message of the film is presented as something like 'they used to be free but now the evil is causing the world to crumble before their eyes' but much of this message remains unclear (what shows the evil of these people?), as does the meaning much of what is shown or said remains vague (such as at the end when a child is born to another woman and the houses are suddenly exposed due to the sandstorm: does the film mean that despite everything life goes on and/or there is always hope?). Because I couldn't grasp the meaning properly, the film didn't really grab me either.

Although their marriage is the result of a village tradition, Banel [Khady Mane] and Adama [Mamadou Diallo] seem very happy with each other. They are determined to break with tradition. When Adama expresses his refusal to succeed his deceased father as chieftain, his mother [Binta Racine Sy] warns of the possible consequences. She predicts disaster, including drought and famine. Moreover, she fears a curse that reigns on the property where Banel and Adama want to live. Primitive superstition? That remains to be seen in this slow-moving psychological drama with some nice visual effects, a strong denouement and strong acting from Mane.
