Film adaptation of the German bestseller 'Die Mittagsfrau' by Julia Franck, about the adventures of a German Jewess from her youth in the 1910s to the end of the Second World War, was praised as a feminist pamphlet, but is nothing more than a banal and sometimes (unintentionally?) hilarious (and not to forget much too long) soap opera. Opens with an incestuous anatomy lesson and is therefore more reminiscent of Emmanuelle than of The Pianist. The most dramatic moments from the life of Helene [Mala Emde] are presented as a fait accompli, usually even in the form of a statement. Helene's love affairs with a German officer [Max von der Groeben] are toe-curling, also because of Von der Groeben's lousy acting. Filip Zimbrunns occasionally delivers beautiful camera work, but that doesn't buy you much.
