During the Shaoxing period of the Southern Song dynasty, four years after the death of hero Yue Fei, Qin Hui leads his troops to negotiate with the Jin kingdom. On the eve of the meeting, the envoy of the kingdom of Jin dies in the prime minister's residence and the secret letter he was carrying disappears. Coincidentally, a petty soldier and the deputy commander of the personal battalion are involved in this conspiracy. Premier Qin Hui orders the two to find the killer within an hour, but things are far from easy. With the investigation fraught with danger, the truth behind the case seems to be hiding a bigger conspiracy.

Not too good. For Yimou Zhang, this film is far removed from his classic works. A one-location film that takes place entirely within the walls of a fort. I don't understand why my predecessor calls this "visual pleasure". You only see walls and close ups on the characters and it is far from the visual splendor we are used to from him. Very basic for his abilities. And then half fill another 2 hours with that.
It starts off as a detective film about a man who has to solve the murder of a messenger and intercept the important letter he was carrying. As the film progresses you understand that everyone has a hidden agenda. The result is that there are quite a few plot twists and a dirty plot gradually takes shape. That Chinese hip hop was original to use in a historical film. Finally, this turned out to be a political appeal to national loyalty. No, this wasn't really a hit for me. Does it matter? To a certain extent, thanks to the surprise effect of the twists; it is simply far too long and a messy mix of comedy, crime and thriller.
