This movie does everything right.

Bonnard is a good subject for a film - one of the most important painters in post-impressionism, the birth of abstract art, with an awe-inspiring oeuvre of works spanning more than 50 years. And yet relatively unknown, and somewhat disparagingly called “peintre du bonheur” because of his preference for everyday subjects. Yet he hardly seems to have led an everyday life, as this film by Martin Provost shows.

The cast is already unsurpassable. Vincent Macaigne is probably one of the best actors that France has at the moment, and also seems to be suitable for Bonnard. Cécile de France perhaps a little less clearly for Marthe, but she compensates for that with her fine acting and presence - what a treat it is to see these two play their leading roles, with one character after another passing by in the sidelines of their lives while we playfully get to know the work of Bonnard and later Marthe, and see them grow in their art. Cinematographically on a level that suits the subject, and with a fine scratchy violin music to frame the key scenes.

This is the kind of film I really enjoy watching - strong narrative, beautifully acted and beautifully shot, and educational in an area you didn't know you'd find interesting. If only a film like this came out every day.
