Un Président, l'Europe et la Guerre plot

'A President, Europe and War' follows French President Macron from a month before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Macron and his staff take all kinds of diplomatic actions to prevent escalation, but despite his good relationship with President Putin and his attempts at negotiations, Russia invades Ukraine. Director Guy Lagache follows Macron on trips to Kiev, Brussels and Moscow. He was also allowed to film some of Macron's conversations with various world leaders, including a very important telephone conversation with Vladimir Putin.

Of course, Macron wanted to use this documentary to establish himself as a capable President and an undisputed world leader, but frankly, he doesn't need to put much effort into that. Lagache follows Macron in the period of mounting international tension leading up to Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. He travels from place to place for talks with dignitaries in Russia, within the EU and the United Nations, but what makes this so special is the relative openness of affairs (provided that no state secrets are leaked) and the emphatic attention to the normally invisible presence and influence of the diplomats, in this case top diplomats Isabelle Dumont and Emmanuel Bonne, who clearly dedicate heart and soul to the best possible outcome.

Rarely do you see such a fascinating insight into the world of international diplomacy. And then also in the kitchen of a great country during a historic event.

It is particularly striking that Macron's telephone conversations with fellow heads of state are simply portrayed in full.

In the context of the war in Ukraine it is very interesting, especially the lead-up to it with telephone conversations between Macron with Putin and Zelensky, in an attempt to de-escalate and defuse tensions. The moment of the invasion itself and the reaction of Macron and his team is also fascinating to watch.

After that, as the war escalates further and sanctions against Russia and oil/gas/grain contracts are discussed, it becomes a bit of a dry affair. Interests are weighed, diplomatic games are played, but that all sounds more exciting than it is. I wouldn't have the patience for it.

Nevertheless, it is interesting to see how such negotiations and interactions between world leaders and institutions go in practice. We know the formal side, but we also see the informal interaction with each other here.

The documentary was released in June 2022 so the war was still fresh; More than 2 years have now passed and much more has happened (although surprisingly little has changed at the front). The documentary is therefore already somewhat dated, but that is unavoidable during an ongoing conflict.
