Fourteen-year-old karateka Jimmy [Tyrell Williams] has just moved from Sittard to Rotterdam, where his father [Fahd Larhzaoui] and mother [Dewi Reijs] are preparing to open their own restaurant. Jimmy has now switched to kung fu at the dojo of grandmaster Shifu [Kar-Yung Lau]. When Jimmy uses violence to protect his brother [Xyan Timpico] and sister [Lamya Chadli] from bully Nino [Ralph Moerman], Shifu decides to teach him a lesson. He pairs him with Li Jie [Haye Lee], a talented student who has disciplinary problems. Jimmy and Li Jie practice a traditional lion dance (a ritual to ward off evil and bring good luck) and discover the importance of focus, dedication and cooperation. A sympathetic coming-of-age drama that incorporates a bit of Chinese culture in an accessible way. Lau is actually a grandmaster in Hung Ga Kung Fu and that is noticeable in everything. Nelson da Luz Bentes deserves praise for the choreography of the lion dance and Lahrzaoui, Reijs and Senna Rijsdijk (as Laura, the pupil who determines the rhythm of the lion dance with her percussion) deliver excellent supporting work. The big minus is the wooden acting Williams, who could have used some of the charisma of "Karate Kid" Ralph Macchio.

Co-financed by China and the Droom & Daad Foundation. Oh well, a decent youth film that—not surprisingly—bores on elements of Bruce Lee and the Karate Kid. Of course, it can't match the spectacle of such films.
