Prickly drama about a single woman who tries to build a life on the fringes of New York society with her “son”, until… the past overtakes them. An emotional rollercoaster with more depth than highs.

In 1994, Inez [Teyana Taylor] takes care of six-year-old Terry [Aaron Kingsley], who is currently living in a foster home. She arranges false papers, moves to Harlem and marries Lucky [William Catlett]. This nuanced drama avoids any cliché and depicts an authentic family life in which all family members struggle to keep their mutual relationships stable. The social critique comes in a subtle but unmistakable way in the segment set in 2001 (with Aven Courtney as Terry). The long-kept family secret only comes to light in 2005and casts things in a different light. But not in the way you expect and that explains why the final confrontation really hits like a bomb. It's been a long time since I shed so many tears. This is mainly due to Rockwell's nuanced, intelligent screenplay and the excellent acting of the entire cast (with Josiah Cross as 17-year-old Terry standing out).

AV Rockwell's feature film debut.

New York in the 1990s is beautifully captured by the set and production design. The acting performances are also convincing. Particularly Teyana Taylor in her role as the homeless Inez with a turbulent life. The film radiates a certain amount of tension, because as a viewer you are curious about what will happen to Inez and Terry. However, the story felt incomplete to me. Some scenes were cut off abruptly, and time suddenly skipped. The film even feels episodic at times, and would probably have been better served as a miniseries. Nevertheless, a reasonable viewer for me.

2.5 *
