Champions plot

"Every dream team starts somewhere."

Marcus Aldridge, a temperamental minor-league basketball coach, is fired after a string of losses. He gets into legal trouble after a collision with a police car. He is ordered by the court to perform community service and coaches a basketball team made up of players with intellectual disabilities. Marcus is initially apathetic to the assignment and is not convinced that the group has any potential as a team. Eventually, he becomes motivated to get the players in shape when he realizes that competing with them in the Special Olympics could be a step towards winning back his old job.

Sympathetic film about a failed basketball coach and his team of players with a mental handicap. Intentionally or unintentionally, the film contains a number of funny scenes. The secondary, romantic storyline is not much.

Nice film in which a professional coach has to coach a basketball team of players with intellectual disabilities as community service. The interaction between Woody Harrelson and the players is definitely entertaining and comes across as genuine enough. The progression is quite predictable, but it is mainly that the film goes on too long (could really have been shorter).

Harrelson on autopilot in his usual jovial-peer role. But fortunately he gets enough resistance from his team, so it doesn't stand out so much that it is a very predictable feel-good thing. Cliches in the bonus offer.

It's nice to see Marin come along again in a small supporting role, which I think could have been a bit more. That would have quickly resulted in a better film.
