Nothing Lasts Forever plot

"The most beautiful lie ever sold"

The size, colour, clarity and cut determine the value of a diamond. But it's another brilliant element that makes it the symbol we know today: marketing. Because the idea that this extremely strong crystallized carbon lump symbolizes eternal love did not originate in the mines.

In the opening scene of this startling documentary, especially for the uninitiated, we meet Dusan Simic, who produces synthetic diamonds at an extraordinarily low cost that can only be distinguished from 'real' using complex, very expensive equipment. Martin Rapaport, described by Kohn as 'the number 1 diamondologist', perpetuates the myth that a woman derives much of her self-esteem from the value of the diamond her husband has given her. That myth is firmly busted by the vicious Aja Raden, who can't get enough of making it clear that she is 'the only female in the room'. And on the basis of a barrage of advertising campaigns that reinforce and/or maintain the dream image behind the diamond, Kohn makes it clear that our ideas about diamonds and their value are based on a myth. Most notably, Stephen Lussier, the director of De Beers, the industry leader in diamond sales for decades, admits that. It is striking that Kohn managed to get this impressive list of interlocutors in front of the camera and that they formally gave him carte blanche with regard to the final editing. Because whoever has seen this will never buy a diamond again. Yes, at a flea market for a few euros maybe.
