A night watchman is startled by a terrible ghost - the tragically drowned daughter of a wealthy merchant. In the morning, the guard has fallen to his death from a high tower and more people die in suspicious accidents. As Melchior investigates these events, his paths cross with those of a prostitute, a priest, a foreign artist and a mad heretic. The clues lead him to the monastery of Pirita, whose gloomy vaults hide a dangerous secret that has been forgotten.
