Winter and war have left a Ukrainian children's home near the frontline more crowded than ever. As cold as the outside world is, so warm is the atmosphere inside. Bold social workers create an almost magical place where the children wait for the state to decide their fate: can their parents take them back in, do they go to foster care or do they move to a more permanent home?

Anna Ivanova is the leader of a home in Ukraine where children whose parents cannot take care of them can stay temporarily. They do not yet know whether they can return to their troubled parents or whether they will be placed in a foster family. Kolya is an erratic, recalcitrant boy who has no faith in his mother and feels responsible for his sisters Kristina and Zheya. Sasha is a sweet, modest girl who perseveres despite the depressing circumstances under which she has to live. Poignant, touching, fascinating.
