Lord of Misrule looks like a cry of frustration from director William Brent Bell to simply prepare something different from the usual horror recipes. He succeeds quite well, but ultimately comes up with a film that has a lot of dead moments. The run-up is relatively ominous in this way, but the subsequent search of the parents is completely charismaless. It takes until the last half hour before anything noteworthy happens again and that is mainly due to the fairly graphic bloodshed. Bell's experience in the director's chair produces beautiful images, but devoid of striking atmosphere. As a result, this horror film never evokes a feeling of fear, threat or unpredictability and only offers skillfully set up imagery and some freaky characters. Plus points for the excellent acting of Ralph Ineson, who actually never disappoints.
