Christmas Bloody Christmas plot

"You better not cry."

It's Christmas Eve and eager record store owner Tori Tooms just wants to get drunk and party. However, her plans go awry when a murderous person dressed as Santa Claus sets out to hunt Tori and her friends. On the other hand, there seems to be more to this Santa than thought: he's a runaway robot.

After delivering two quite competent horror films in 2019, director Joe Begos really misses the mark here. A film about a murderous Santa Claus doll sounds ridiculous at first glance and Begos makes no secret of that, but he then squeezes considerably little pleasure out of the event. To start with, Christmas Bloody Christmas introduces main characters Riley Dandy and Sam Delich, two completely uninteresting characters who just ramble on without any relevant content. Begos nevertheless found the conversations themselves very interesting, because before the two finally realize that they are being hunted by the threat, it is almost 40 minutes later and they have done little else than fuck and whine. It also doesn't help that Abraham Benrubi doesn't seem robotic at all and also exudes little charm as a killer. The film is provided with a fairly colorful environment, but the experimental FPV camera work looks sloppy and the flow is unbalanced. Begos regularly spices up the film a bit with strikingly brutal and detailed murders, but the boring showdown in the finale ultimately delivers the final blow for a large failing grade.
