Jafar Panahi once again defies the Iranian regime with another film that sublimely crosses the lines between fiction and reality. Since he is forbidden to make films (himself), he remotely instructs his assistant director in filming the factual account of Zara [Mina Kavani] and Bakhtiar [Bakhtiyar Panjeei] who try to obtain a fake passport. with which they can flee to Europe with the help of a human smuggler. Jafar communicates from a small village on the border where he is a guest of Ghanbar [Vahid Mobasheri]. After taking some pictures in the village, he comes into conflict with some villagers, led by the village elder Sherif [Naser Hashemi], and has to contend with traditions that clash with his own liberal values. A film as only Panahi knows how to make it at the moment, truly unique, but less compelling than 3 Faces.

Three faces come together in this sublime film, complex in form and content.

- The invisible face of man Jafar Panahi, director by profession, living in Iran, with a ban on making films and being banned from leaving the country.

- The second face is the movie No Bears I'm watching with the movie character Jafar Panahi, played by the human Panahi, directing a movie remotely from Iran on the border with Turkey, while getting involved himself with a love couple in the village where he lives.

- The third face is the film within the film that Jafar Panahi (as a film character) is making about a love couple who want to flee the country.

Seems complicated, but it's not too bad, trust me. Well, what the human Panahi raises, usually in the form of a contradiction between which there is a sharp boundary: city and village, image and word, fact and fiction, science and faith - and I am probably incomplete. He dissects the two extremes to the bone, with the image versus word contrast being the most challenging - certainly for a film viewer and a director.

Once the film character Panahi crosses a border (literally the one with Turkey), but he quickly takes a step back. The man Panahi does not want to leave Iran at all, even though he lives in the midst of such different cultures that treat him politely but ruthlessly and against which he can only resist in one way, namely by making this film.

It's amazing how Jafar Panahi always succeeds in blending fiction and non-fiction with his films with a highly documentary-like style. It causes your engagement to increase by intimately flirting with this reality. Panahi is not ready for his test piece. Sentenced to six years in prison just last year, I thought he was currently out on bail after six months in Tehran's notorious Evin Prison.

No bears is a beautifully constructed film about a film within a film/documentary. The director, Jafar Panahi himself, directs from a distance because he was not allowed to leave Iran. If you don't know Panahi's oeuvre very well, it is a bit of a shock after the opening scene suddenly says "cut" by Panahi himself.

In a critical and clandestine way, Panahi continues to kick the shins of the regime with his films. That alone deserves the greatest admiration. Panahi has balls and guts to spare, but with at least as much insight and a message, he is a very remarkable figure. Good looking!
