McEnroe plot

"The price of perfection"

Portrait of one of the most explosive and fascinating sports icons of all time. John McEnroe was the world number one for four years in a row and his epic battles with Bjorn Borg helped define the golden age of tennis, but the enormous controversy on and off the court betrayed an inner conflict. During a night in New York, John travels through his memory to investigate why his need for connection both drove and nearly broke him. "McEnroe" features completely unseen archival footage from some of the greatest matches in tennis history - including the US Open and Wimbledon - and home video footage of John himself.

Well-made, at times fascinating documentary about one of the best (and above all most explosive) sports icons of all time. John McEnroe consults himself quite deeply in the interview fragments and of course there is great archive material to enjoy. Especially the period in which he competed with great Björn Borg is beautifully discussed. In the second part of the documentary, in my opinion, too much time is spent on private affairs, with the later years of McEnroe's tennis career being somewhat obscured.

No professional tennis player has won as many titles as John McEnroe, who led the world rankings for four consecutive years and was also one of the absolute top doubles players. McEnroe has been working as a tennis commentator for many years now, but his unparalleled achievements are still overshadowed by his emotional outbursts on the court. In this fascinating documentary, McEnroe reveals his true emotions during this period. Naturally, attention is paid to his rivalry with top tennis players Jimmy Connors and Björn Borg (he is still very good friends with Borg), his special friendship with the lively Vitus Gerulaitis, his turbulent marriage to Tatum O'Neal and the complex relationship with his father and (later) his children.
