A jazzman's blues is reminiscent of a musical film, but is rather a historical drama wrapped in the necessary romance and tragedy. The story of a black man who is in love at a time and place where it didn't take much for a black man to be murdered. A story that has been filmed before, but that certainly deserves more to be told. Although the hard drama does not quite come to the fore. Tyler Perry chooses to put the romance and music more forward. Despite the underlying horror of the story, it seems that the rough edges have been dragged off.
It's a bit of a soft film, but the cast does a pretty good job. And those who love romantic tragedy will certainly get their money's worth. Although I fear that the film will soon be forgotten. It doesn't really stand out for that.

Very interesting film because of the music and because of the race issue, which culminates in an event that was not uncommon, see for example Emmett Till. The film also shows a love story that manages to move, although some characters are very one-dimensional, such as the brother. Also, the use of autotune in the main character's vocals is very distracting (at least for me). Things like this easily save half a star, so I end up at 3*.

The concept for the film is anything but original. After all, we have already seen the theme of racial hatred several times. In principle, there is nothing wrong with this, but unfortunately this film is insufficiently developed. So many questions remain unanswered. For example, it never really gets clear why Balou's father hates him so much. After all, both characters have the same skin color. Despite the fact that the script contains some holes, he looks reasonably away thanks to the good acting performances.
