Good film about an illegitimate child who grows up to be a talented violinist and composer. A special piece of history that takes place in Paris just before the revolution. Although a bit melodramatic at times, it's still a good story. Well dressed and Kelvin Harrison Jr. convinced in the title role.

In the prologue to this biography of Joseph Bologne [Kelvin Harrison Jr.], he challenges none other than Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart [Joseph Prowen] to a violin-off. It makes it clear that this marginalized black musician was not inferior to Mozart, but the suggestion that there was a bitter rivalry between Mozart and Bologna also shows the shortcoming of Stefani Robinson's screenplay. This was supposed to be the story of a black man who transcended his skin color for his skill (including fencing) until it came in handy to use his "race" against him. Robinson, however, opts for a banal story about forbidden love and completely ignores the most interesting period in the life of this fascinating person: the French Revolution. This Chevalier de Saint-Georges deserves a more dignified portrait than this.
