It was difficult to determine what I thought of the film, initially. Nice shot, yes. Beautiful music too, they managed to get me involved. The whole thing just flowed along a bit, until I started to discover what the director actually wanted to say with this. My awe grew.

At least, I think I know what the thoughts behind Animalia are. Of course, I could be seriously mistaken, as it has been suggested elsewhere that the story can be 'multi-interpreted'. But I think it is literally about the need to accept the unknown and I think that is very beautifully told.

Please judge for yourself. And/or read my full review .

In the film, mysterious things happen in the world, the army is deployed but the government does not want to say what is going on. That mystery also applies to the viewer: you grab hold of everything that happens and is said to get an idea of what is going on, but that remains unclear for a long time at the very least. The film consciously chooses the Hollywood cliché of an Invasion of the Body Snatchers (or zombie film) as a form with animals and people who are no longer themselves ('possessed') and strange beings are responsible for the mysterious natural phenomena. But in the end it turns out to be a reverse Invasion of the Body Snatchers: we live in a selfish way, for which we also abuse faith (we call on God to help us when we are in need, just as the masses flock together during an alien invasion the mosques), while we are connected to everything and everyone (the divine is like the water that fish do not notice either). It is precisely the kind, helpful people who are 'possessed' by this divine power and really exist; Selfish people who do not care about others live superficially (for the money), feel threatened all the time and lead a false life.

This reversal also allows a metaphorical interpretation whereby the event that aliens visit us can unite us as humanity: ultimately it is a spiritual transformation. The story is told as a fascinating road trip - pregnant Itto is alone, anxious, but also meets inspiring people and experiences mystical experiences - with beautiful images. Director Alaoui has immediately delivered a tour de force with this debut film.

The heavily pregnant Itto [Oumaima Barid] is married to Amine [Mehdi Dehbi], who is part of a rich and powerful Moroccan family with whom she does not always feel comfortable due to her humble origins. Due to a major incident, which reveals itself during the film, Amine ends up stuck in a camp in Kouribgha. For safety reasons, Itto must evacuate on her own and join her husband. Along the way she gets help from Fouad [Fouad Oughaou], a shepherd who has little respect for power and wealth. Old-fashioned SF thriller - in the good sense of the word - uses an intriguing mystery as a framework for criticism of the hypocrisy of the class system and religion, as well as our strongly clouded bond with our natural environment - and the animals in particular. Enjoyable film that unfortunately seems to back down in terms of societal and social criticism in the epilogue.
