Big mwoh. Violent porn where the violence is not so explicitly shown. Things happen that hardly come together to form a narrative. The dialogues are uninteresting, the characters too. I don't really understand what the makers want to achieve with this film. And I find that shaking camera annoying. The film has quite beautiful and atmospheric shots, but there are just as many ugly, underexposed and boring ones. Especially the first half hour does not build up anything and the ending is strange. In short, I didn't like it that much.

Atmospheric horror film with a powerful soundtrack, which mixes all kinds of starting points and subgenres. This allows Megalomaniac to be interpreted in all sorts of ways, but ultimately it remains a fairly pure horror film with a number of terrifying visual images. Director Karim Ouelhaj squeezes out all sorts of gruesome atmospheres in every possible way, with the piercing red eyes as the main example. The acting is also excellent, the confusing camera work rubs the explicit horrors in extra thick and the finale is suitably dark and disturbed. Only the middle section has too many moments that simply come to a standstill, mainly because the relatively large dose of drama does not really promote the whole positively. Megalomaniac is therefore not always that captivating, but nevertheless of rock-solid quality.

Nice.

It's as if they've hijacked a script from the Dardennes and built a horror film around it. The setting is truly perfect for this kind of film, but then we already knew about DuWelz. This film adds a slightly more imaginative touch, though it's never entirely clear how concrete those dream sequences actually are.

The acting is good, the visuals are superb, the horror is quite brutal (without being truly in-your-face), and there are plenty of uncomfortable scenes. As far as I'm concerned, Ouelhaj is a talent; hopefully, he won't stop at this one film. I really miss this kind of horror, amidst all the A24 and Blumhouse hype.

4.0* and an extensive review
