Well, I wanted to see this one. The film is such a flop that I only knew from this film after I read in NRC that this film was a flop. I did see the film on the agenda at the cinema, not knowing that this was a film from Walt Disney Animation Studios. Well, went anyway.

I don't know what the reason for the flop is. Probably the combined family and homosexual son, but I don't think that's the main cause. Or just a story that does not captivate at first sight, something that occurs more often with more original stories, although this is loosely based on the work of Jules Verne, among others. Disney is better off just filming a fairy tale safely. Or it's just that this isn't a very great movie, people knew this and the marketing department didn't work overtime either.

This is partly due to the fact that that world is somehow similar to ours, but that it will never really come to life. It starts nicely (even with a nice introduction in a nice animation style) with reasonable design of houses and transport (reminiscent of those futuristic ideas from the time of Verne, also seen a bit in Disney's Discoveryland). But soon the story picks up a pace, actually before we get to know that world and characters except in an unsubtle way. And that never really gets better.

The movie is okay, but it just isn't it. That world is full of great ideas, but is also kitschy ugly and not very exciting. The same goes for the characters, who all remain fairly flat and clichéd. And the film still looks away, but does no more than that. 2.5*.

NB: For the first time since 2019 or so that I had to go to a 3D again (unfortunately it didn't run in glorious 2D) and again that really doesn't add anything. Perhaps a little in the opening scene, but after that the added value is already gone.

Strange World seems like an ode to Steven Spielberg with Indiana Jones in particular and I thought I heard a nod to Jurassic Park in the music, but that could also be just me. It has become an adventure film with the necessary clichés. The figures are quite nice, but it never gets special and seems to be band work. The animation is also pretty soulless. Disney seemed to have recovered with more recent films, but this is clearly a step backwards.

After years of dutifully following his father Jaeger Clade [Dennis Quaid], a famous adventurer, Searcher [Jake Gyllenhaal] has chosen his own path. He discovered a new energy source and now lives a quiet life as a farmer with his husbands Meridian [Gabrielle Union] and son Ethan [Jaboukie Young-White]. Until old acquaintance Callisto Mal [Lucy Liu], now leader of Avatonia, enlists his help to fight a biological virus. Disney was apparently too obsessed with diversity in the cast and characters and clearly spent a lot of time making the hair "fluffy" as naturally as possible. They could have spent that time better on the screenplay, because that really doesn't seem like anything.
