The story is set in 1800s England. When she fails one of his demands for a bride, Julia Thistlewaite is dumped by London's most eligible bachelor, Mr. malcolm. Feeling humiliated and determined to exact revenge, she convinces her friend Selina Dalton to play the part of his ideal partner. Soon, Mr. Malcolm wonders if he's found the perfect woman or a shrewd con artist.

Julia [Zawe Ashton] is upset that Mr. Malcolm [Sope Dirisu] rejects her after one meeting based on a list of conditions he believes the ideal woman must meet and devises a ruse to retaliate in kind. Through her cousin [Oliver Jackson-Cohen] she discovers the contents of the list and asks her bosom friend Selina [Freida Pinto] to pose as the ideal woman. Ultimately Selina has to reject Mr. Malcolm because he does not meet the list of conditions she supposedly drew up. Within a few minutes you know how this film adaptation of a clearly Jane Austen-inspired novel ends. It is therefore not original and Ashton's acting is on the wooden side.
