Nostalgia plot

Felice Lasco returns to his hometown of Naples to care for his critically ill mother. He's been gone for over forty years; this time he has spent in the Middle East and Africa. Now back in the Sanità area, he rediscovers several places from his past, discovers new customs and rules in the city, and that something from the past still seems to gnaw at him. In Naples he also meets an old friend, Oreste, who has gone into crime.

Recently many films have been released about friendship between boys and this film is also more about such a friendship than about the mafia. The film is about a man who grew up in Naples and was inseparable from his best friend, but fled Naples at the age of 15 and has now returned 40 years later from a kind of "see Naples and then die" but in nostalgic sentence because in fact he longs for the lost friendship. But where he is 'saved', his friend is not and he must come to terms with his past and the friend in order to settle in Naples. It's a nice film that doesn't bore but never really gets exciting or impressive: the mafia is always present but quite literally stays in the background and I had hoped for a more intense confrontation.

Felice [Pierfrancesco Favino] returns to his hometown of Naples after 40 years to assist his declining mother [Auror Quattrocchi]. He is overcome with a sense of nostalgia for his younger years, especially regarding his friendship with Oreste Spasiano [Tommaso Ragno]. In fact, he plans to settle in Naples with his wife [Sofia Essaïdi]. Priest Luigi [Francesco Di Leva] emphatically warns Felice that he is living too much in the past, especially since Oresto has become the most feared criminal in town. Flashbacks reveal what Felice's nostalgia is based on and Martone telephones the denouement well in advance. Entertaining and well made, but there is no suspense or surprise. Ragno steals the movie with ease.

There are quite a lot of movies with Nostalgia in the title and this is quite an interesting one. The story is a bit on the slow side, but that's not unpleasant. It is clear that director Mario Marone is well known in Naples, the city where Nostalgia is set. Dark narrow alleys, old houses, building materials and other rubbish dominate the somewhat grim street scene. Not a city from an advertising brochure, especially if you add the menacing presence of the Gomorrah. Main character Felice Lasco, excellently played by Peirfrancesco Favino, has been away from Naples for forty years. Why only becomes clear later. But he is back for his old mother and lingers in the city that he likes more and more. In the scene in which he calls his left-behind wife in Cairo, he says: 'Nothing has changed here in forty years'. And so it looks; like going back to the 70s. The most beautiful scene is the bath scene, which is worth gold. But it still remains a bit vague for me what Marone actually wants with this film. Nevertheless, well worth a look. It still plays in the better movie houses.
