The images of the film are beautiful: with every scene you have the feeling that you are walking through a painting. And the idea is also nice: it was the task or role of Empress Elisabeth (better known as Sisi or Sissy) to represent (the splendor of) the empire but has now become old (40 years), so that the press gossip about things like her weight and her being trapped in the image she has to show and people have of her. She is more than her image but cannot develop her talents: her strength is constricted as her corset constricts her body, so that she is depressed and on the verge of going mad. The film is postmodern in the sense that the theme is that the image - including the moving image of film - is not objective because it rather hides the real person (which we recognize on e.g. Facebook) and that also applies to this film that is deliberately uses anachronistic, alienating elements such as pop songs or a tractor in the picture and shows aspects of the Empress's life that were possible but at least undermine our image of her, such as masturbation, chain smoking and heroin use. In keeping with that depression, the images are always gloomy (but atmospheric).

Yet it does not produce a fascinating film because, in line with its theme, the film itself is mainly image at the expense of substance.

Sisi, better known as Sissi, the Lady Di of the nineteenth century, how many films and series have been made about her life?

Always good for a beautiful costume drama, and all Sisi's are of course role models for the free-spirited and independent twenty-first woman. For example, this Sisi smokes like a chimney and repeatedly flouts the strict protocol, fucks lustily in a drama series from 2021 (unfortunately ladies: in the nineteenth century that privilege was only reserved for us, the not yet to be treat STD affected everyone).

Trapped in her golden cage, she tries to make something of her life. Her life. That's what it's about. How it fares with the rest, her children, her complicated country that included so many nationalities, her husband, her lady-in-waiting whom she simply forbids to marry a good match, she doesn't care.

As long as the scale doesn't go above 55.

Mission accomplished.

Wonderful movie.

Unflattering biopic about Empress “Sissi”, in which reality is richly overshadowed by fiction. Vicky Krieps plays a convincing leading role. That's the most positive thing I could find in this film.
